SWISS WINE FESTIVAL
August 23-26
History
The first Swiss Wine Festival was held in 1968. An old fashioned affair with a flea market on the Courthouse lawn, grape stomping, and stein-tossen, it was hailed a big success. Six years and many thousands of people later, the festival was proclaimed too big and was discontinued. A local event called "The Patchwork Fair" took its place for five years.
In 1979, the festival was reborn as the "Swiss Alpine Festival" with emphasis on family involvement, a fenced in festival site and admission charge. A clean and fun new festival was begun. The Alpine theme was popular and included a Swiss Costume Contest and blowing of the Alp Horn, as well as the parade, arts and crafts exhibits and polka dancing. A tour of Historic Homes was also held during the festival weekend.
A few years later the community felt it was time to pay hommage to our winemaking history. With the addition of a "Wine Tent" featuring Indiana wineries and assuming the original title of The Swiss Wine Festival, the event was moved to its present location at the Paul Ogle Riverfront Park. In addition to traditional events, it features a spectacular fireworks display over the river, a chartered boat for river cruises, and a duck race. The festival's new location has proven to be a crowd pleaser, delighting both old and young alike.
The Swiss Wine Festival now takes its place as a valuable event focusing on our community's cultural heritage. The 2007 Festival will be held August 23-26 at the Riverfront Park in Vevay. www.swisswinefestival.org

(200 seat capactiy theater available for concerts or performances. Reasonable rates. Call 800-435-5688 details and information.)
History
Built in 1837, the Historic Hoosier Theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the oldest commerical structures in Vevay, Indiana, the building was built as a warehouse and store designed to serve the thriving river traffic of the time. Over the years it has housed a saddlery, the local post office, a tavern and the offices of the Vevay Newspaper.
Popular entertainment arrived in Vevay in 1926, when Minor Bakes purchased the building and converted it into a movie theater. The theater closed in 1955 and the building remained unoccupied for much of the next twenty-eight years.

In 1983, Historic Vevay, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation, was formed to purchase and restore the building. Over the next four years local residents, business leaders and community organizations contributed their time, expertise and money into rejuvenating this historic site, a process that culminated in the summer of 1987, when a renovated Hoosier Theater hosted its first theatrical presentation in over thirty years with a performance of 'The Rainmaker.'
Popular performances over the years include 'Crimes of the Heart,' 'Gold Dust,' 'Wild River Fare,' 'Wonderful Tennessee,' 'Bus Stop,' 'Arsenic and Old Lace,' and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.' Many local musical groups and visiting artists have performed on this stage to enthusiastic audiences. Other events held at the Theater include slide shows, poetry readings, political forums, and historical dramas.
