history of wine

history of wine

Over two centuries ago, vintner J.J. Dufour toiled and tilled the rich soil of southern Indiana, making way for the birth of America’s commercial wine industry in the hills along the Ohio River. Wine from Vevay was then served at the White House during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. The wine was sold in Cincinnati, Lexington, Louisville, St. Louis, Vincennes, as well as taverns and inns making Switzerland County the first successful Commercial Winery in America.
